The Australiana Society, founded in 1978, is devoted to researching, preserving and collecting Australia’s built and moveable cultural heritage, including decorative arts, fine art, architecture, social history, designers and makers. The Society publishes a quarterly journal, Australiana, which showcases these areas of study. The Society has also been associated with leading publications on Australian furniture, silver, ceramics and jewellery.
The Australiana Society has established a research grant to continue to promote research and publication, aligned with its core purpose, particularly through the Society’s journal, Australiana.
The Australiana Society Research Grant will support research into Australia’s built and moveable cultural heritage, including decorative arts, fine art, architecture, social history, designers and makers, together with the activities of preserving and collecting, with a view to publishing the grant recipient’s work (complete or excerpts) in the journal Australiana. Our objective is to support pioneering research and the grant recipient’s development of expertise in Australiana.
Applicants are invited to nominate their chosen topic, allied to the Society’s research objectives. Past Australiana articles are available on the Society’s website and illustrate the ongoing evolution of Australiana as an area of study. The Society aims to expand knowledge through exploration of previously unresearched topics.
Applicants will agree to meet the following criteria within one year: (a) complete a written work for publishing in Australiana, and (b) present their work to the Society in a formal or informal presentation at one of our scheduled meetings. Applicants are also expected to promote the work and the Australiana Society in other relevant forums and media.
Applications are now invited for the Australiana Society 2027 Research Grant.
The recipient will be awarded $5000 paid in two equal instalments, one in advance and one on completion of the work unless otherwise agreed.

The grant period is February 2027 to January 2028, however, the recipient is invited to complete and present their research ahead of the end of the twelve-months grant period if ready.
